Another school year has begun in full force! Rosslyn Academy, where Kevin works full time, is a Christian day-school (not boarding) that is American curriculum-based. Rosslyn Academy is fully accredited (with the Association of Christian Schools International & with Middle States Association) and is primarily for the children of Missionaries, but is also open to the children of embassy/ diplomat, business and NGOs (Non-Governmental-Organizations).
Kevin serves full time at Rosslyn Academy as the High School Chaplain and Religious Education teacher. This semester Kevin is teaching World Religions, 10th grade New Testament Survey, Youth Ministry Leadership (a discipleship course for seniors), as well as leading chapel services and serving in the role of High School Chaplain.
He keeps his Chaplain Office open as much as possible. Students come into his office on a fairly regular basis -- sometimes just to have a cup of coffee and sometimes to talk about some pretty serious things. Rosslyn does have a full-time, fully-trained counselor, so Kevin is able to refer students to her if it is a serious situation or beyond the scope of a Chaplain's advice! Not all of his students are Christian, which makes for some great opportunities to discuss beliefs & faith.
It is interesting to note the make-up of the student body this academic year at Rosslyn Academy:
478 students total (K5-12th grade)
out of those 478 students:
160 students are in Elementary (K5-5th grade)
118 students are in Middle School (6th -8th grade)
200 students are in High School (9th-12th grade)
293 of the students are Missionary Kids (from 69 different mission groups & organizations)
185 of the students are embassy kids, business kids, NGO kids, etc.
Rosslyn Academy's students are from 30 home countries:
Australia, Belgium, Burundi, Canada , Chile, Denmark, DR Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Germany, Ghana, Grenada, India, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Korea, Madagascar, Malaysia, Netherlands, Nigeria, Norway, PR China, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Tanzania, Uganda, United Kingdom, USA and Zimbabwe.
There are 46 teaching staff, 5 administrators , and 64 support staff at Rosslyn Academy.
Classes started over a week ago, on August 14. Kevin has 67 students in his classes (total), and there are 200 students in the High School Chapel service.
High School has already had 2 Chapel services, and both have gone well. Last week Kevin preached about having an expectant heart (expecting God to show up, to be involved in our lives and to help us grow)! Today, Kevin preached about the school's theme verse, "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will." (Rom 12:2 NIV). He used Shadrach, Meshach & Abednego as examples of not conforming.
Our girls attend Rosslyn Academy, and they love it! They ride the school bus every day (except right now Christina can't ride it due to her broken collar bone -- the roads are too rough in the bus, so she is riding with Kevin right now). Mary is in 4th grade (there are 2 classes of 4th grade this year), and Christina is in 2nd grade. They both love their teachers and are enjoying being with their friends at school again.
School is from 8:30 to 3:30 M-F. Our girls get on the bus around 7:20 and get home around 4:15. Kevin usually leaves the house at 7am, and returns home between 5 and 6pm. Kevin stays after school to work in his office and to spend time interacting with students & parents at sports games.
